| Millions of people in the Global South suffer from neglected diseases, many of which could be treated, even cured, if they were detected early enough. But reliable, low cost diagnosis hasn't been available, as drug companies have no incentive to invest in the diseases of the poor. New pandemics can go undetected until they have spread out of control, like HIV, and treatable ailments can cripple impoverished communities because it is too expensive to detect them early enough to do something.

| Last year, 23.5 million people stood up against poverty and set a new Guinness World Record. They stood up to remind their governments to keep their promises. The promises they made seven years ago with the Millennium Development Goals.
The promise to end poverty inequality and hunger. The promise to stop children dying from preventable diseases. The promise to ensure basic education for all children, particularly girls. The promise to stop women dying during pregnancy and childbirth. The promise to provide water and sanitation and to protect the environment. The promise to provide more and better aid, fair trade and debt cancellation. The promise to achieve these goals by 2015. The promises that some of them have not kept.
Stand Up and Speak Out is the growing movement of people no longer prepared to stay seated or silent in the face of poverty and inequality. On October 16th and 17th, Stand Up and Speak Out for the Millennium Development Goals. Help us break the world record. So we can break the record of broken promises.

This music video (featuring a remix of the Tracy Chapman song 'Let It Rain') endeavours to highlight the urgent need of our brothers and sisters in Horn of Africa, whose lives are endangered by the worst drought in sixty years. More than 10 million people (including those in the worst affected areas of Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia).
United Nations and international aid agencies say the crisis is overwhelming their ability to provide assistance to the millions of people who are suffering... and as the agencies are overstretched and under-funded, they are appealing for more help from the international community.
The U.N. Children's Fund estimates more than two million young children from the Horn of Africa are malnourished, and in need of urgent life-saving actions. It says half a million of those children are facing imminent life-threatening conditions... and warns that many of the children may be left with long-lasting physical and mental problems.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are fully stretched in various locations inside Somalia, as well as assisting exhausted refugees crossing Somalia's borders into Ethiopia and Kenya.
According to World Vision... Risks of the outbreak of disease are growing, and people's access to food and water is in jeopardy. Children are among those most vulnerable in the worst hit countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.
Save the Children has advised that more than a quarter of children in the worst-hit parts of Kenya are now dangerously malnourished... and in Somalia, malnutrition rates have reached 30 percent in some areas, making the Horn of Africa one of the hungriest places on earth.
Save the Children has already launched a major humanitarian response in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia... feeding tens of thousands of underweight children; providing life-saving medical treatment; and getting clean water to remote communities. But with the situation worsening by the day - and no more rain due till late September - Save the Children urgently needs money to dramatically ramp up its response.
According to Matt Croucher, Save the Children's regional emergency manager for East Africa... "Thousands of children could starve if we don't get life-saving help to them fast"... "Parents no longer have any way to feed their children; they've lost their animals; their wells have dried up; and food is too expensive to afford"... "We can stop this tragedy unfolding, but we only have half the money we need. We urgently need to raise the rest so we can save more children's lives."

| As people who care about the state of our world and the struggles of humanity, you and I -- and everyone who supports the United Nations -- have a role to play in advancing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
I like to think of the MDGs as the world's priority "to-do" list for lifting the standards of human living. If that's something you think is important, then the MDGs are your to-do list, as well.
Please take a moment to watch a message on why these issues matter, and join me by putting something on your own MDG to-do list.
This is my challenge for you: Do at least one thing to contribute to achieving the MDGs today. For example, help fight preventable diseases by donating an anti-malaria bed net through the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign. Raise awareness about how promoting women and children's health must be a global priority. Or advance gender equity by joining our new "Girl Up" initiative and share it with the young women in your life. You'll move us closer to realizing the MDGs with every action you take through the UN Foundation.
We have a lot of progress to make in order to advance the MDGs. If we're going to turn things around, you're going to be the one to make it happen. Change starts with you.
What will you do today?
Thank you,
Ted Turner
Founder and Chairman, UN Foundation

United Nations, New York, 16 October 2009 - Today is World Food Day. The theme this year is achieving food security in times of crisis.
Marking this occasion, the Secretary-General says in a message that over the past two years, volatile food prices, the economic crisis, climate change and conflict have led to a dramatic and unacceptable rise in the number of people who cannot rely on getting the food they need to live, work and thrive.
The Secretary-General calls on all to respond to respond to the needs of the hungry -- by ensuring adequate political and financial support for emergency food assistance and by investing in food production and distribution.
Meanwhile, the World Food Programme (WFP) is calling on the world to remember the more than one billion urgently hungry people with inadequate access to food.
World Food Day is actually No Food Day for almost one out of every six people around the world this year, said WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran. She added that for decades, WFP has been able to feed around ten per cent of the world's hungriest men, women and children, but this year, for the first time, the agency is unlikely to reach that target.
And Jacques Diouf, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Programme (FAO) asked world leaders to reach a road consensus on the total and rapid elimination of hunger when they gather in Rome for the World Summit on Food Security, on November 16-18.

| In this complete interview, Tibetan Buddhist leader His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa reflects upon the meaning of oneness in this age. Noting how values of oneness hold the Tibetan culture in exile together, His Holiness describes how cultural cohesion has revivified the religious view of metaphysical oneness. His Holiness believes that religion and spirituality must adapt to reflect the evolving human condition, although root causes of suffering remain the same. Spiritual leaders and luminaries can facilitate this adaptation by connecting their spiritual power with the devotional power of the masses. Spirituality can be spread not through commodification, but rather through meaningful and conscious relationships intended to benefit the whole.
