The United Nations Human Rights Council today strongly condemned the recent violence in Libya and ordered an international inquiry into alleged abuses, while also recommending that the country's membership in the UN's top human rights body be suspended. In a resolution adopted unanimously at the end of a special session held in Geneva, the 47-member Council called on the Libyan Government to meet its responsibility to protect its population, immediately end all human rights violations, stop any attacks against civilians, and respect the popular will, aspirations and demands of its people. The video demonstrated the assembly process for the Uber Shelter prototype. We are an organization focused on designing emergency shelters to meet the needs of different climates terrains family sizes and cultures. The model shown in this video is a collapsible, 2 story, 190 square foot, 3 roomed shelter with 2 of the rooms fully insulated. The second floor is a sleeping loft which utilizes vertical space for increased living area. It is shipped flat in a 4x8x2 package that is unfolded and assembled on site. It is man-portable and assembled with a wrench. The key feature that separates our design from any shelter in the field is that the Über is raised off the ground. This feature is imperative for weather purposes. Telescoping legs allow the shelter to remain level on uneven terrain. The Über Shelter is in prototype phase and is being tested.

ULGII, Mongolia, 28 September 2007 -- Twice a year, here in the capital of Mongolia's westernmost province, Khuangan grabs a shovel, ties a cord around his waist and descends into the darkness to keep the water supply flowing. Securing a steady and safe source of water is one of Khuangan's main concerns. Few households enjoy piped drinking water in his neighbourhood. Most families must take it upon themselves to provide water -- digging and maintaining their own wells, or using public water-pumping stations. Khuangan's is a common problem in rural Mongolia, where only one out of five households has access to improved water sources, compared to 62 per cent in urban areas. Fewer than 5 per cent of rural homes have adequate sanitation. As a result, every year thousands of children under the age of five suffer from diarrhoea, and hundreds more are infected with Hepatitis A. UNICEF is working to provide rural families with better access to safe water and improved sanitation. In collaboration with local communities, the organization aims to improve the quality of water sources and latrines, especially in schools. It also seeks to teach children and their families better hygiene habits, such as thorough hand-washing with soap or disinfectants. Making a phone call is something that many people take for granted. Yet millions in rural villages around the world simply do not have easy or affordable access to a telephone. The Village Phone concept was developed precisely to help extend access to telecommunications beyond the urban areas. Started by GrameenPhone in Bangladesh -- a client of IFC, IFC is now working with MTN (also an IFC client) and other partners to replicate the Village Phone concept in several African countries, starting with Nigeria. IFC also collaborated with the Grameen Foundation and other partners to create a Village Phone Replication Manual -- essentially a 'how-to' resource for setting up a Village Phone project. Marking this occasion, the Secretary-General says in a message that over the past two years, volatile food prices, the economic crisis, climate change and conflict have led to a dramatic and unacceptable rise in the number of people who cannot rely on getting the food they need to live, work and thrive. NANGAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan, 22 September 2008 Afghan and international forces, including the Taliban, have been asked to lay down their weapons in support of the biggest Peace Day that Afghanistan has ever experienced. Yesterdays UN International Day of Peace was marked by marches, gatherings and ceremonies. Kites flew all over the country. UNICEF, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the World Health Organization in Afghanistan urged all sides to take Peace Day as an opportunity to renew their commitment to childrens health and well-being. In it, the Secretary-General welcomed the General Assembly's new resolution on next year's planned MDG Summit. Coming amid mixed progress toward the Goals and new crises that threaten the global effort to halve extreme poverty, the Summit will be a crucially important opportunity to redouble our efforts to meet the Goals by the agreed deadline of 2015. The Secretary-General intends to make 2010 the year of the Millennium Development Goals. He urges all Member States and people everywhere to start preparing for the Summit now.
