| United Nations, New York - An estimated 80 per cent of the world's refugees now live in developing countries and yet anti-refugee sentiment is growing in many industrialized nations, the United Nations said in a report unveiled today, urging the richer States to address the deep imbalance.
In absolute terms and in relation to the size of their economies, poor countries shoulder a disproportionate refugee burden, according to the 2010 Global Trends report of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), released on World Refugee Day, marked on 20 June every year.

In this pair of films, designed for schools, Excellent Development provide case studies of their conservation driven development and community-led approach in semi-arid Kenya through the lenses of sustainable farming and sustainable development. These films and the series of mini-films which explore each individual element of the charity's holistic approach to soil and water conservation offer a valuable insight into how communities can strengthen their long-term sustainability and make a positive grassroots contribution to fighting global climate change.
The sustainable farming case study demonstrates how farmers address problems of soil erosion and water availability using terracing, sand dams & trees as a first step towards sustainable farming. The terracing and trees massively reduce soil erosion and keep more moisture in the farms while the sand dams harvest rain water allowing farmers to dedicate more time to their farms, try out new farming methods like zero-grazing and inter-cropping, diversify the range of their crops and work towards achieving food security and generating incomes.
The sustainable Development case study explores why conservation of the environment has to be addressed first in order to make sustainable development possible in a semi-arid environment and looks at the impacts of soil and water conservation in terms of the improved availability of water and food, improvements in health, incomes and the positive contribution towards fighting climate change. The film also picks out the elements that make the development sustainable; the positive impact on the natural environment, Excellent Development's bottom-up approach and the use of appropriate technology.

| A bank foreclosure story you've got to see to believe. A Collier County couple turns the tables on Bank of America, the bank that tried to foreclose on their home. Now, the family is foreclosing on the bank! Even bringing trucks and deputies ready to seize property.
The foreclosure nightmare started when Warren and Maureen Nyerges paid cash for a home owned by Bank of American in the Golden Gate Estates. They never had a mortgage whatsoever. But, the bank fouled it up and wound up issuing a foreclosure through their attorney.
The couple took their case to court and after a year and a half nightmare the foreclosure was dropped. A Collier County judge said Bank of America has to pay the couple's $2,534 legal fees for the error. After more than five months the bank still hadn't paid up. So, the homeowners' attorney did just what the bank would do to get their money, legally seize their assets.
"I instructed the deputy to go in and take desks, computers, copiers, filing cabinets, including cash in the drawers," Attorney Todd Allen told WINK News.
Outside the Bank of America on Davis Boulevard, several deputies stood by with movers ready to start hauling out the bank's office supplies and furniture.
Inside, the homeowners' attorney was locked out of the bank manager's office by deputies while the bank manger tried to figure out what to do.
Allen says the manager was visibly shaken, "Having two Sheriff's deputies sitting across your desk, and a lawyer standing behind them, demanding whatever assets are in the bank can be intimidating. But, so is having your home foreclosed on when it wasn't right."
After about an hour the bank finally cut a check to satisfy the debt, and no furniture was taken. A representative for Bank of America issued a statement saying they are sorry for the delay in issuing funds. They claim the original request went to an outside attorney who is no longer in business.
As for Allen, he calls this a symptom of a larger problem he sees often in the courts, where banks don't perform their due diligence on foreclosure cases. "As a foreclosure defense attorney this is sweet justice."

As people who care about the state of our world and the struggles of humanity, you and I -- and everyone who supports the United Nations -- have a role to play in advancing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
I like to think of the MDGs as the world's priority "to-do" list for lifting the standards of human living. If that's something you think is important, then the MDGs are your to-do list, as well.
Please take a moment to watch a message on why these issues matter, and join me by putting something on your own MDG to-do list.
This is my challenge for you: Do at least one thing to contribute to achieving the MDGs today. For example, help fight preventable diseases by donating an anti-malaria bed net through the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign. Raise awareness about how promoting women and children's health must be a global priority. Or advance gender equity by joining our new "Girl Up" initiative and share it with the young women in your life. You'll move us closer to realizing the MDGs with every action you take through the UN Foundation.
We have a lot of progress to make in order to advance the MDGs. If we're going to turn things around, you're going to be the one to make it happen. Change starts with you.
What will you do today?
Thank you,
Ted Turner

| Exploring the potential for the FDU (www.freedigitaluniverse.com) Virtual Economy to become real enough to address poverty, environment, and Millenium Development Goals (MGDs) such as universal education. FDU is a economy that pays people for participating, and also funds charities; corporations acting as Vendors in the FDU virtual forum earn profits - everyone wins! In this time of crisis, let us explore the potentials of the information age to expand access to emerging markets to empower a truly global economy, this is doable once the poor have a means to earn into the virtual knowledge marketplace. This is our purpose, a free equal human rights forum, with a universal e-currency solvent that is backed by real (public) money, that supports, individuals, charities, and commerce partners. Is this possible you ask, yes, consider this: What if Virtual Worlds were real? What makes them real is their economy. So what if we could buy real goods instead of just virtual products with our earnings? And what if we could include the entire emerging marketplace of users who have no way to currently participate in e-commerce for lack of a cred card? One purpose of the FDU model is to allow those emerging market users who have no credit card or bank account a means to earn into the economy as marketers, publishers, consultants, and through auctions of real world goods. With those earnings they can now purchase Digital Goods and services, or if they have a local exchange (called a SCALE) they can use their earnings in a local barter exchange. Commending the efforts undertaken so far to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today stressed that more can be done, as the Security Council debated legal options to help bring the perpetrators of such crimes to justice.
"Over the past three years, the international community has made concerted efforts to combat the problem, including by establishing a Contact Group and deploying significant naval assets to the region," he told the Security Council as it met to discuss the issue.

They were successful in many projects before 1992, when they raised enough money to go to the UN's Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Their aim was to remind the decision-makers of who their actions or inactions would ultimately affect. The goal was reached when 12 yr old Severn closed a Plenary Session with a powerful speech that received a standing ovation.

United Nations, New York, 12 June 2009 - Noon briefing by the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. On 13 June 2009, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will launch the WMD-WeMustDisarm multiplatform campaign, beginning the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace.
The General Assembly decided to commemorate the day annually on 21 September as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. This year, the theme focuses on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
Joining the Secretary-General in promoting the campaign are:
* UN Messenger of Peace and Academy Award-winning actor and producer Michael Douglas, who has championed the cause of disarmament for the UN since 1998; and
* Rainn Wilson, featured actor in the American television comedy, The Office, who has more than 800,000 followers on Twitter;
Over the next 100 days leading up to 21 September, they, along with the Secretary-General, will raise awareness of the costs and dangers of nuclear weapons by issuing a daily message, via Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, email and radio, urging the world to disarm. The Secretary-General is taking the lead by issuing the first 10 tweets of the campaign.
We would also like to encourage any one wishing to get involved to send tweets on nuclear disarmament and non proliferation, re-tweet the Secretary-Generals messages, sign up to dedicated Facebook or MySpace pages, or all of the above.
In his message to mark the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace, the Secretary-General said, As we observe the International Day of Peace with world leaders gathered in New York for the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, I will proclaim one strong, simple message: We Must Disarm!

| MaximsNewsNetwork: 30 October 2009 - UNTV - United Nations: UN officials pay tribute to the five UN staff killed on Wednesday after a deadly attack in Kabul. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls for more political, material and financial support for UN staff security.
Top UN officials today (30 October) paid tribute to the five UN staff killed on Wednesday in a deadly attack in Kabul, calling for urgent improvements in the security arrangements for UN staff.
After a moment of silence in honor of the fallen colleagues, Secretary-General Ban Ki moon, told a town-hall meting that too often we take our security for granted, and appealed for more political, material and financial support for staff security from member states. He added that despite the clear need our security management system continues to suffer from resource constraints.
The Head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Helen Clark told the meeting that these horrific acts test our courage not only to do our jobs in the field, but also to hold fast to the ideals that took us there, and voiced support for the Secretary-Generals call to do the utmost to fund and support us in providing the best possible security arrangements in such environments.
The Executive Director of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) Ann Veneman said that the incident in Kabul was yet another painful reminder of how UN staff continue to work in difficult and dangerous environments to assist those who are most in need and concluded that insuring the safety of humanitarian workers is of utmost priority.
Yesterday, the Security Council, in a presidential statement, voiced support for the measures already taken by Ban to ensure staff security and said it looked forward to further detailed proposals by him. It also commended the determination of the UN not to be deterred by the tragic incident and to carry on its mission in Afghanistan.

United Nations, New York, 10 August 2009 - Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger is the first of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). World Bank estimates show that 1.4 billion people in the developing world were living in extreme poverty in 2005. Still with all the bad, the MDG target of cutting in half the proportion of people in the developing world living on less that $1 US a day by 2015 remains within reach for the world as a whole.

| In this complete interview, Tibetan Buddhist leader His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa reflects upon the meaning of oneness in this age. Noting how values of oneness hold the Tibetan culture in exile together, His Holiness describes how cultural cohesion has revivified the religious view of metaphysical oneness. His Holiness believes that religion and spirituality must adapt to reflect the evolving human condition, although root causes of suffering remain the same. Spiritual leaders and luminaries can facilitate this adaptation by connecting their spiritual power with the devotional power of the masses. Spirituality can be spread not through commodification, but rather through meaningful and conscious relationships intended to benefit the whole.

United Nations, New York, 26 February 2010 - Video Message from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the occasion of International Women's day 2010.
The fight for women's rights is central to the UN's global mission.
Fifteen years ago, in Beijing, Governments committed themselves to equality, development and peace for all women, in all countries.
The Beijing Declaration was a landmark on the road to women's empowerment.
It has guided policy making.
It has inspired women and girls to strive for equality and opportunity, and reminded everyone that this is their right.
We have seen progress.
Girls are now more likely to receive an education.
Women are now more likely to run businesses or participate in government.
But much work remains.
Death in childbirth is still too common. Too few women have access to family planning.
Violence against women remains a cause of global shame, and sexual violence in war is endemic.
I have just appointed a special representative to mobilize international action to address these crimes.
At the United Nations itself, we have more women in senior posts than at any time in history.
Securing women's rights is central to all our hopes for peace, security and sustainable development.
As we look back on 15 years of achievement, let us look forward to a world of equality and progress for all.
