More than 10 million people (including those in the worst affected areas of Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia). United Nations and international aid agencies say the crisis is overwhelming their ability to provide assistance to the millions of people who are suffering... and as the agencies are overstretched and under-funded, they are appealing for more help from the international community. The U.N. Children's Fund estimates more than two million young children from the Horn of Africa are malnourished, and in need of urgent life-saving actions. It says half a million of those children are facing imminent life-threatening conditions... and warns that many of the children may be left with long-lasting physical and mental problems. - Some communities are printing their own currency for local use - It's legal as long as currency doesn't resemble U.S. dollars and is paper only - Any income from business conducted in local currency is subject to taxes - Some businesses say local currencies keep people spending locally. Steve Carlotta's family-owned camera store is struggling along with other mom and pop stores. But he's found a way to compete with Internet stores and big-box chains. Carlotta's store accepts BerkShares -- a local currency in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He credits it with helping keep local customers coming back to his store. And as U.S. dollars and credit vanish in this economic crisis, more communities are looking into printing their own currencies. This concept isn't new. During the Great Depression dozens of complementary currencies flourished as thousands of banks failed. Today, it's estimated there are at least 2,500 complementary currency systems around the world, says Bernard Lietaer, a co-founder of the Euro and a local currency proponent. In the United States, there are alternative currency systems in California, Wisconsin, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Massachusetts. BerkShares are a form of local currency developed in the Berkshire region of Massachusetts two years ago. About 350 merchants accept BerkShares in addition to U.S. currency. People pay 95 federal cents to get one BerkShare or $95 for 100 BerkShares.

ULGII, Mongolia, 28 September 2007 -- Twice a year, here in the capital of Mongolia's westernmost province, Khuangan grabs a shovel, ties a cord around his waist and descends into the darkness to keep the water supply flowing. Securing a steady and safe source of water is one of Khuangan's main concerns. Few households enjoy piped drinking water in his neighbourhood. Most families must take it upon themselves to provide water -- digging and maintaining their own wells, or using public water-pumping stations. Khuangan's is a common problem in rural Mongolia, where only one out of five households has access to improved water sources, compared to 62 per cent in urban areas. Fewer than 5 per cent of rural homes have adequate sanitation. As a result, every year thousands of children under the age of five suffer from diarrhoea, and hundreds more are infected with Hepatitis A. UNICEF is working to provide rural families with better access to safe water and improved sanitation. In collaboration with local communities, the organization aims to improve the quality of water sources and latrines, especially in schools. It also seeks to teach children and their families better hygiene habits, such as thorough hand-washing with soap or disinfectants. United Nations, New York, March 2012 - The goal of reducing by half the number of people without access to safe drinking water has been achieved, well ahead of the 2015 deadline for reaching the globally agreed development targets aimed at ridding the world of extreme poverty, hunger and preventable diseases, the United Nations said today. Between 1990 and 2010, over two billion people gained access to improved drinking water sources, such as piped supplies and protected wells, according to a joint report by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN World Health Organization (WHO). On September 19th, 2009, artists, musicians, performers and ambassadors for peace gathered at New York's Central Park to take part in the Vigil for International Peace and Ecology. This annual event is dedicated to promoting peace and justice through non-violent resolution. TLOGAWATU, Indonesia, 18 August 2008 -- On the eastern slopes of Mount Merapi, a sacred, active volcano on the island of Java, change is about to come with the next rainfall. Men from all across the village of Tlogawatu are pouring concrete into a blue cylindrical mould behind the house of a villager named Paimo. The mysterious shape is a rainwater cistern. As it fills up during the wet season, this 'catchment' will provide Paimo's family with a year-round source of water.
