United Nations, New York, 24 August 2010 - The United Nations is dispatching a senior staff member to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as senior officials express outrage at the recent rape and assault of more than 150 civilians by rebels based in the remote and troubled east of the country. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his Special Representative for Sexual Violence in Conflict, Margot Wallström, condemned the attacks, saying they demonstrated the widespread level and systematic nature of sexual violence in the DRC. A delegate to her Green Belt Movement, RRI's Elizabeth Baker was in the second row as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon pinned a dove on Professor Maathai to symbolize the honor shared by only a handful of others. Professor Maathai spoke vividly of the role of activism in protecting civil society's interests worldwide and called for climate action in a Copenhagen deal.

Marking this occasion, the Secretary-General says in a message that over the past two years, volatile food prices, the economic crisis, climate change and conflict have led to a dramatic and unacceptable rise in the number of people who cannot rely on getting the food they need to live, work and thrive. The Secretary-General calls on all to respond to respond to the needs of the hungry -- by ensuring adequate political and financial support for emergency food assistance and by investing in food production and distribution. Meanwhile, the World Food Programme (WFP) is calling on the world to remember the more than one billion urgently hungry people with inadequate access to food. ULGII, Mongolia, 28 September 2007 -- Twice a year, here in the capital of Mongolia's westernmost province, Khuangan grabs a shovel, ties a cord around his waist and descends into the darkness to keep the water supply flowing. Securing a steady and safe source of water is one of Khuangan's main concerns. Few households enjoy piped drinking water in his neighbourhood. Most families must take it upon themselves to provide water -- digging and maintaining their own wells, or using public water-pumping stations. Khuangan's is a common problem in rural Mongolia, where only one out of five households has access to improved water sources, compared to 62 per cent in urban areas. Fewer than 5 per cent of rural homes have adequate sanitation. As a result, every year thousands of children under the age of five suffer from diarrhoea, and hundreds more are infected with Hepatitis A. UNICEF is working to provide rural families with better access to safe water and improved sanitation. In collaboration with local communities, the organization aims to improve the quality of water sources and latrines, especially in schools. It also seeks to teach children and their families better hygiene habits, such as thorough hand-washing with soap or disinfectants. NIAMEY, Niger, 17 July 2008 -- The latest UNICEF-World Health Programme Joint Monitoring Programme report focuses on sanitation improvements. The report finds that while more people are drinking water from safe sources, far too few are using improved sanitation. Niger has one of the lowest rates of improved sanitation, and problems remain with water supply there. Unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene are among the underlying causes of Niger's high child mortality rate. Water-borne diseases account for nearly 20 per cent of deaths in children under the age of five here. Less than 45 per cent of the population has access to clean water, and less than 10 per cent to adequate sanitation. These statistics are well below Niger's targets for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. UNICEF is supporting the Government of Niger by working with communities to improve access to safe water and household water treatment and sanitation. By raising awareness of good hygiene practices such as hand washing and using family latrines, the country can prevent diarrhoea and reduce child deaths. Men from all across the village of Tlogawatu are pouring concrete into a blue cylindrical mould behind the house of a villager named Paimo. The mysterious shape is a rainwater cistern. As it fills up during the wet season, this 'catchment' will provide Paimo's family with a year-round source of water. After a moment of silence in honor of the fallen colleagues, Secretary-General Ban Ki moon, told a town-hall meting that too often we take our security for granted, and appealed for more political, material and financial support for staff security from member states. He added that despite the clear need our security management system continues to suffer from resource constraints. The Head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Helen Clark told the meeting that these horrific acts test our courage not only to do our jobs in the field, but also to hold fast to the ideals that took us there, and voiced support for the Secretary-Generals call to do the utmost to fund and support us in providing the best possible security arrangements in such environments.
