United Nations, New York, March 2012 - The goal of reducing by half the number of people without access to safe drinking water has been achieved, well ahead of the 2015 deadline for reaching the globally agreed development targets aimed at ridding the world of extreme poverty, hunger and preventable diseases, the United Nations said today. Between 1990 and 2010, over two billion people gained access to improved drinking water sources, such as piped supplies and protected wells, according to a joint report by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN World Health Organization (WHO). Millenium Development Goals for 2015 In the year 2000, 189 leaders from around the world met at the historic Millenium Summit in New York. According to the then Secretary-General of the UN, Kofi Annan, the UNs role for the next millenium will be crucial; making it a focal point for joint efforts in a world that presents worrisome statistics that endanger the perpetuation of generations to come. • 1.2 billion people live with less than US$1.00 per day. • 800 million people are malnourished. • 153 million children are below their ideal weight. • 115 million children are not enrolled in school. • 97% of these children are in developing countries. • 64% of the worlds illiterate population are women. • 80% of the worlds refugee population are women. • 60% of children not enrolled in primary school are women. • Every year 10 million children die of preventable diseases. • 30 thousand deaths per day. • Anually, 500 mil thousand women die when giving birth or during their pregnancy. • In Africas Sub-Saharan region 1 in 16 women die in these conditions. • In countries of the OCDE this same proportion is of only 1 in every 2800 women. • In the year 2000, 22 million people had died of AIDS. • 13 million children lost their parents to the HIV virus. • 40 million people live with the virus. • Anually, 300 million cases of malaria are detected. • Anually 60 million people are infected by tuberculosis. • In the year 2000 1 billion people in developing countries didnt have access to drinkable water. • 2.4 billion people didnt have access to sanitary services. • 14% of the worlds population (in the developed world) produces 44% of the yearly CO2 total. • US$ 100 billion are necessary for acheiving the MDGs. • 0.5 of the GDP of developed countries is necessary for raising that amount. The result of this meeting? A commitment, with a set deadline; 2015. Erradicate extreme poverty and hunger. Achieve universal primary education. Promote gender equality and empower women. Reduce child mortality. Improve maternal health. Combat AIDSHIV, malaria and other diseases. Ensure environmental sustainability. Develop a global partnership for development. A bank foreclosure story you've got to see to believe. A Collier County couple turns the tables on Bank of America, the bank that tried to foreclose on their home. Now, the family is foreclosing on the bank! Even bringing trucks and deputies ready to seize property. The foreclosure nightmare started when Warren and Maureen Nyerges paid cash for a home owned by Bank of American in the Golden Gate Estates. They never had a mortgage whatsoever. But, the bank fouled it up and wound up issuing a foreclosure through their attorney. The couple took their case to court and after a year and a half nightmare the foreclosure was dropped. A Collier County judge said Bank of America has to pay the couple's $2,534 legal fees for the error. After more than five months the bank still hadn't paid up. So, the homeowners' attorney did just what the bank would do to get their money, legally seize their assets. "I instructed the deputy to go in and take desks, computers, copiers, filing cabinets, including cash in the drawers," Attorney Todd Allen told WINK News. Outside the Bank of America on Davis Boulevard, several deputies stood by with movers ready to start hauling out the bank's office supplies and furniture. Inside, the homeowners' attorney was locked out of the bank manager's office by deputies while the bank manger tried to figure out what to do. Allen says the manager was visibly shaken, "Having two Sheriff's deputies sitting across your desk, and a lawyer standing behind them, demanding whatever assets are in the bank can be intimidating. But, so is having your home foreclosed on when it wasn't right." After about an hour the bank finally cut a check to satisfy the debt, and no furniture was taken. A representative for Bank of America issued a statement saying they are sorry for the delay in issuing funds. They claim the original request went to an outside attorney who is no longer in business. As for Allen, he calls this a symptom of a larger problem he sees often in the courts, where banks don't perform their due diligence on foreclosure cases. "As a foreclosure defense attorney this is sweet justice." Two buckets of safe water a day is the minimum a child needs to live, yet 4000 children die EVERY DAY because they don't even have that. For many, the dangers lie in collecting water -- a job often handed out to girls and women. Instead of attending school, a child may walk several hours a day to the nearest water source. Children's health improves and school attendance rises when water-pumps are installed in schools. UNICEF works around the globe installing latrines and pumps but 1.1 billion people still drink unclean water.
