United Nations, New York, 22 December 2009 - Yesterday, we issued a statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on the September 2010 General Assembly high-level plenary meeting on the Millennium Development Goals.
In it, the Secretary-General welcomed the General Assembly's new resolution on next year's planned MDG Summit. Coming amid mixed progress toward the Goals and new crises that threaten the global effort to halve extreme poverty, the Summit will be a crucially important opportunity to redouble our efforts to meet the Goals by the agreed deadline of 2015.
The Secretary-General intends to make 2010 the year of the Millennium Development Goals. He urges all Member States and people everywhere to start preparing for the Summit now. He also strongly urges Heads of State and Government to attend the MDG Summit and engage fully in ensuring a successful, practical, action-oriented outcome that delivers results for the billions of people struggling to meet their basic needs and to live in dignity and peace

United Nations, New York, 24 August 2010 - The United Nations is dispatching a senior staff member to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as senior officials express outrage at the recent rape and assault of more than 150 civilians by rebels based in the remote and troubled east of the country.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his Special Representative for Sexual Violence in Conflict, Margot Wallström, condemned the attacks, saying they demonstrated the widespread level and systematic nature of sexual violence in the DRC. Mr. Ban and Ms. Wallström urged that the perpetrators be brought to justice and pledged to help authorities in the DRC to fight impunity against sexual and gender-based violence.

With five years left until the 2015 deadline, the UN General Assembly has agreed to hold a Summit in New York on 20-22 September to mobilize urgent global action for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The aim is for the Summit to result in an agreed action agenda for 2011-2015 and generate broad engagement by governments, civil society and the private sector.

United Nations, New York, 14 may 2010 - A United Nations development panel has stressed the smarter use of resources and sustainable economic growth as key drivers to tackle climate change and achieve the anti-poverty targets with a 2015 deadline.
Fertile land, clean water and adequate sanitation are crucial if countries are to break out of the poverty trap and prosper, according to the Commission on Sustainable Development, whose current session focused on transport, waste management, chemicals and mining.

The evening featured a gala screening of The Day After Peace introduced by Jude Law, followed by musical performances from Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Adams, Lenny Kravitz and John Legend. Our special guest speakers included UNICEF goodwill ambassador Martin Bell OBE; actor, Emilia Fox; Tottenham and England football star, David Bentley; and BBC Sports Presenter, Gabby Logan.

Kenyan tree-planting activist Wangari Maathai became a UN Messenger of Peace during the Copenhagen Climate Talks. A delegate to her Green Belt Movement, RRI's Elizabeth Baker was in the second row as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon pinned a dove on Professor Maathai to symbolize the honor shared by only a handful of others. Professor Maathai spoke vividly of the role of activism in protecting civil society's interests worldwide and called for climate action in a Copenhagen deal.

Leaders issue Call to Action on the Millennium Development Goals
Gordon Brown, Bill Gates, Bono, Queen Rania, Ban Ki-Moon, Klaus Schwab, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, and John Chambers have issued a joint statement at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting vowing to make 2008 a turning point in the fight against poverty. The world is facing a development emergency, they said, and we pledge to work together to help the world get back on track to meet the MDGs.

In the first of a series of mini-films, Excellent Development explains how its approach to creating development through conservation is benefiting communities in Kenya.
In addition to exploring each individual element of the charities holistic approach to soil and water conservation, these films also offer a valuable insight into how Sand Dams, a key element of Excellent Development's approach, represent an effective and necessary small-scale approach to strengthening communities' long-term sustainability.
Whilst being critical to improving water supplies, food production, health and incomes for communities in semi-arid Kenya, sand dams are also a grassroots answer to fighting climate change, a benefit recently reinforced by the release of the government commissioned Stern Report.
The Stern Report has renewed attention on the impacts of climate change in Africa highlighting their uneven distribution, with the poorest countries being most affected.
Simon Maddrell, Excellent Development co-founder comments, "The development challenges in semi-arid Africa are completely different to the industrial nations. In semi-arid Africa it is conservation that can actually create sustainable development. Water and soil conservation provides farmers with the environment to create livelihoods by creating oases in semi-arid lands that can support water and food security. Arguably, the communities we are working with are doing far more to reverse the impacts of climate change than any of us in the West. They deserve our support, not just because they struggle to sustain their lives, but as global citizens concerned with the future of our planet."
