ULGII, Mongolia, 28 September 2007 -- Twice a year, here in the capital of Mongolia's westernmost province, Khuangan grabs a shovel, ties a cord around his waist and descends into the darkness to keep the water supply flowing.
Securing a steady and safe source of water is one of Khuangan's main concerns. Few households enjoy piped drinking water in his neighbourhood. Most families must take it upon themselves to provide water -- digging and maintaining their own wells, or using public water-pumping stations.
Khuangan's is a common problem in rural Mongolia, where only one out of five households has access to improved water sources, compared to 62 per cent in urban areas. Fewer than 5 per cent of rural homes have adequate sanitation. As a result, every year thousands of children under the age of five suffer from diarrhoea, and hundreds more are infected with Hepatitis A.
UNICEF is working to provide rural families with better access to safe water and improved sanitation. In collaboration with local communities, the organization aims to improve the quality of water sources and latrines, especially in schools. It also seeks to teach children and their families better hygiene habits, such as thorough hand-washing with soap or disinfectants.

The United Nations Human Rights Council today strongly condemned the recent violence in Libya and ordered an international inquiry into alleged abuses, while also recommending that the country's membership in the UN's top human rights body be suspended.
In a resolution adopted unanimously at the end of a special session held in Geneva, the 47-member Council called on the Libyan Government to meet its responsibility to protect its population, immediately end all human rights violations, stop any attacks against civilians, and respect the popular will, aspirations and demands of its people.

And when it comes to literacy, two-thirds of the world's 900 illiterate adults are women. CARE is committed to Millennium Development Goal #3 because empowering women and creating gender equality is the way to bring about lasting change against global poverty. Every single Millennium Development goal is directly related to women's rights. Until the world gets this right, none of the other goals can be met.

United Nations, New York, March 2012 - The goal of reducing by half the number of people without access to safe drinking water has been achieved, well ahead of the 2015 deadline for reaching the globally agreed development targets aimed at ridding the world of extreme poverty, hunger and preventable diseases, the United Nations said today.
Between 1990 and 2010, over two billion people gained access to improved drinking water sources, such as piped supplies and protected wells, according to a joint report by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN World Health Organization (WHO).

This music video (featuring a remix of the Tracy Chapman song 'Let It Rain') endeavours to highlight the urgent need of our brothers and sisters in Horn of Africa, whose lives are endangered by the worst drought in sixty years. More than 10 million people (including those in the worst affected areas of Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia).
United Nations and international aid agencies say the crisis is overwhelming their ability to provide assistance to the millions of people who are suffering... and as the agencies are overstretched and under-funded, they are appealing for more help from the international community.
The U.N. Children's Fund estimates more than two million young children from the Horn of Africa are malnourished, and in need of urgent life-saving actions. It says half a million of those children are facing imminent life-threatening conditions... and warns that many of the children may be left with long-lasting physical and mental problems.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are fully stretched in various locations inside Somalia, as well as assisting exhausted refugees crossing Somalia's borders into Ethiopia and Kenya.
According to World Vision... Risks of the outbreak of disease are growing, and people's access to food and water is in jeopardy. Children are among those most vulnerable in the worst hit countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.
Save the Children has advised that more than a quarter of children in the worst-hit parts of Kenya are now dangerously malnourished... and in Somalia, malnutrition rates have reached 30 percent in some areas, making the Horn of Africa one of the hungriest places on earth.
Save the Children has already launched a major humanitarian response in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia... feeding tens of thousands of underweight children; providing life-saving medical treatment; and getting clean water to remote communities. But with the situation worsening by the day - and no more rain due till late September - Save the Children urgently needs money to dramatically ramp up its response.
According to Matt Croucher, Save the Children's regional emergency manager for East Africa... "Thousands of children could starve if we don't get life-saving help to them fast"... "Parents no longer have any way to feed their children; they've lost their animals; their wells have dried up; and food is too expensive to afford"... "We can stop this tragedy unfolding, but we only have half the money we need. We urgently need to raise the rest so we can save more children's lives."

United Nations, New York, 21 April 2011 - The world must dramatically step up its existing efforts to conquer malaria if it is to reach the goal of near zero deaths from the disease -- which, despite being preventable and curable, currently kills almost 800,000 people every year -- by 2015, the United Nations warns today.
Ahead of World Malaria Day, which is officially observed on Monday, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the goal will not be met unless there is "an extraordinary intensification" in two key areas.

Peace One Day is working to manifest an annual day of global unity; a day of intercultural cooperation on a scale that humanity has never known. The next stepping stone on this journey is to reach 3 billion people with the message of Peace Day by 2012.

NIAMEY, Niger, 17 July 2008 -- The latest UNICEF-World Health Programme Joint Monitoring Programme report focuses on sanitation improvements. The report finds that while more people are drinking water from safe sources, far too few are using improved sanitation. Niger has one of the lowest rates of improved sanitation, and problems remain with water supply there.
Unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene are among the underlying causes of Niger's high child mortality rate. Water-borne diseases account for nearly 20 per cent of deaths in children under the age of five here. Less than 45 per cent of the population has access to clean water, and less than 10 per cent to adequate sanitation.
These statistics are well below Niger's targets for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
UNICEF is supporting the Government of Niger by working with communities to improve access to safe water and household water treatment and sanitation. By raising awareness of good hygiene practices such as hand washing and using family latrines, the country can prevent diarrhoea and reduce child deaths.

NANGAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan, 22 September 2008 Afghan and international forces, including the Taliban, have been asked to lay down their weapons in support of the biggest Peace Day that Afghanistan has ever experienced.
Yesterdays UN International Day of Peace was marked by marches, gatherings and ceremonies. Kites flew all over the country.
UNICEF, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the World Health Organization in Afghanistan urged all sides to take Peace Day as an opportunity to renew their commitment to childrens health and well-being. They asked that schools, literacy centres, students and teachers be protected from attacks.
From January through 20 September 2008, more than 200 school attacks have taken place in Afghanistan, resulting in 37 deaths.
