But reliable, low cost diagnosis hasn't been available, as drug companies have no incentive to invest in the diseases of the poor. New pandemics can go undetected until they have spread out of control, like HIV, and treatable ailments can cripple impoverished communities because it is too expensive to detect them early enough to do something.

The multilingual public service announcement will be broadcast during the tournament in South Africa and aims to bolster efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight internationally-agreed targets which aim to reduce poverty, hunger, maternal and child deaths, disease, inadequate shelter and gender inequality by 2015.

United Nations, 4 October 2010 - Governments, the private sector and civil society have to work much more closely together if the world is to build and sustain better cities, which are now home to more than half the global population, United Nations officials said today.
Marking World Habitat Day, whose theme this year is "Better City, Better Life," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a message spotlighting the effect that smart policies and actions can have on the well-being of the estimated 1 billion people worldwide who live in slums or other forms of sub-standard housing.

The fight for women's rights is central to the UN's global mission.
Fifteen years ago, in Beijing, Governments committed themselves to equality, development and peace for all women, in all countries.
The Beijing Declaration was a landmark on the road to women's empowerment.
It has guided policy making.
It has inspired women and girls to strive for equality and opportunity, and reminded everyone that this is their right.
We have seen progress.
Girls are now more likely to receive an education.
Women are now more likely to run businesses or participate in government.
But much work remains.
Death in childbirth is still too common. Too few women have access to family planning.
Violence against women remains a cause of global shame, and sexual violence in war is endemic.
I have just appointed a special representative to mobilize international action to address these crimes.
At the United Nations itself, we have more women in senior posts than at any time in history.
Securing women's rights is central to all our hopes for peace, security and sustainable development.
As we look back on 15 years of achievement, let us look forward to a world of equality and progress for all.

Raised in Vancouver and Toronto, Severn Cullis-Suzuki has been camping and hiking all her life. When she was 9 she started the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. They were successful in many projects before 1992, when they raised enough money to go to the UN's Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Their aim was to remind the decision-makers of who their actions or inactions would ultimately affect. The goal was reached when 12 yr old Severn closed a Plenary Session with a powerful speech that received a standing ovation.

United Nations, New York, 11 May 2010 - The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched a major online drive today to spur action to eliminate hunger and highlight the fact that one in six people worldwide go hungry every day.
Through the "1billionhungry project" people can voice their outrage about world hunger by adding their names to an online petition. The campaign uses a yellow whistle as an icon encouraging people to blow the whistle against this global scourge.

Top UN officials today (30 October) paid tribute to the five UN staff killed on Wednesday in a deadly attack in Kabul, calling for urgent improvements in the security arrangements for UN staff.
After a moment of silence in honor of the fallen colleagues, Secretary-General Ban Ki moon, told a town-hall meting that too often we take our security for granted, and appealed for more political, material and financial support for staff security from member states. He added that despite the clear need our security management system continues to suffer from resource constraints.
The Head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Helen Clark told the meeting that these horrific acts test our courage not only to do our jobs in the field, but also to hold fast to the ideals that took us there, and voiced support for the Secretary-Generals call to do the utmost to fund and support us in providing the best possible security arrangements in such environments.
The Executive Director of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) Ann Veneman said that the incident in Kabul was yet another painful reminder of how UN staff continue to work in difficult and dangerous environments to assist those who are most in need and concluded that insuring the safety of humanitarian workers is of utmost priority.
Yesterday, the Security Council, in a presidential statement, voiced support for the measures already taken by Ban to ensure staff security and said it looked forward to further detailed proposals by him. It also commended the determination of the UN not to be deterred by the tragic incident and to carry on its mission in Afghanistan.

Video entries should be two (2) minutes in duration or less.
The contestant must be at least eighteen (18) years of age to enter the contest.
Video submissions should be original and unpublished work by the contestant.

Kenyan tree-planting activist Wangari Maathai became a UN Messenger of Peace during the Copenhagen Climate Talks. A delegate to her Green Belt Movement, RRI's Elizabeth Baker was in the second row as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon pinned a dove on Professor Maathai to symbolize the honor shared by only a handful of others. Professor Maathai spoke vividly of the role of activism in protecting civil society's interests worldwide and called for climate action in a Copenhagen deal.

United Nations, New York, 12 June 2009 - Noon briefing by the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. On 13 June 2009, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will launch the WMD-WeMustDisarm multiplatform campaign, beginning the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace.
The General Assembly decided to commemorate the day annually on 21 September as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. This year, the theme focuses on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
Joining the Secretary-General in promoting the campaign are:
* UN Messenger of Peace and Academy Award-winning actor and producer Michael Douglas, who has championed the cause of disarmament for the UN since 1998; and
* Rainn Wilson, featured actor in the American television comedy, The Office, who has more than 800,000 followers on Twitter;
Over the next 100 days leading up to 21 September, they, along with the Secretary-General, will raise awareness of the costs and dangers of nuclear weapons by issuing a daily message, via Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, email and radio, urging the world to disarm. The Secretary-General is taking the lead by issuing the first 10 tweets of the campaign.
We would also like to encourage any one wishing to get involved to send tweets on nuclear disarmament and non proliferation, re-tweet the Secretary-Generals messages, sign up to dedicated Facebook or MySpace pages, or all of the above.
In his message to mark the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace, the Secretary-General said, As we observe the International Day of Peace with world leaders gathered in New York for the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, I will proclaim one strong, simple message: We Must Disarm!

To celebrate International Day of Peace, A Ray of Hope, UNESCO Youth Ambassador for the Culture of peace has organised three competitions.
Our thanks to Sara for the design and production of the video. The music, Put the Message is from our friend Brian Kennedy, who kindly joined with us in our first CD A Ray of Hope and Friends.
Snippets of photographs of World Heritage Sites have been used and unfortunately we do not know who the photographers are but we thank, and acknowledge them for their contribution, and hope that the use of them for this purpose is to their satisfaction.
Photographs of the children are from A Ray of Hopes global projects.
The competition, which will finish on 21st September, is just yet another medium for caring and sharing.
By entering a comment on YouTube you will be immediately entered into a free prize draw (please add your country of residence).
If you wish a competition slightly more challenging, then look at the World Heritage Sites on the video there are 6 and use the first 6 letters of their countries of location to spell out an international organisation. For World Water Week UNICEF is focusing on the impact of water and sanitation interventions on children. Here is one in a series of related stories.
TLOGAWATU, Indonesia, 18 August 2008 -- On the eastern slopes of Mount Merapi, a sacred, active volcano on the island of Java, change is about to come with the next rainfall.
Men from all across the village of Tlogawatu are pouring concrete into a blue cylindrical mould behind the house of a villager named Paimo. The mysterious shape is a rainwater cistern. As it fills up during the wet season, this 'catchment' will provide Paimo's family with a year-round source of water.
With support from UNICEF, most of the other houses in the village will also soon receive catchments.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared for the first time that access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right. In a historic vote Wednesday, 122 countries supported the resolution, and over forty countries abstained from voting, including the United States, Canada and several European and other industrialized countries. There were no votes against the resolution. We speak with longtime water justice activist, Maude Barlow.

United Nations, New York, 21 April 2011 - The world must dramatically step up its existing efforts to conquer malaria if it is to reach the goal of near zero deaths from the disease -- which, despite being preventable and curable, currently kills almost 800,000 people every year -- by 2015, the United Nations warns today.
Ahead of World Malaria Day, which is officially observed on Monday, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the goal will not be met unless there is "an extraordinary intensification" in two key areas.
